After a long winter, summer weather is finally here! It’s time to bring on the warm temperatures, sandals, backyard barbecues with the family, and most importantly spontaneous summer vacations! From road trips to Canada’s wonderland to hopping on a plane to the U.S. or even a fun Euro-bound trip, it’s easy to get swept up in the endless activities available this summer, which can leave you at risk of stretching your finances a little too far.
It’s important to be mindful of your budget when planning your summer activities. If your finances are more modest, that’s no problem. You can still have a great summer without breaking the bank.
Here are a few helpful tips to help you have memorable summer fun on a shoestring budget:
1. Be a tourist in your own town
While a tropical getaway might be calling your name, book yourself a staycation instead. Save on the cost of a week-long trip to your favourite sun destination for you and the family and create your 5-star vacation experience right in your own city. Trade-in a costly flight, and instead plan a day trip with friends or family to a neighbourhood you haven’t explored in your city! For example, if you live in Toronto and haven’t been to Little Italy or Leslieville, the summer is the perfect time to scope these spots out. Grab your friends and check out all the unique coffee shops, markets, and cultural spots that make these neighbourhoods special. While you might spend a little money on a souvenir or a snack while you are out, you still save big and get to make memories along the way!
2. Soak in the beach vibes
You don’t have to go far to enjoy a great beach vacation this summer. Many cities across Canada have great local beaches that promise a fun day in the sun for the whole family. Soak up the savings by packing a picnic lunch for you and your loved ones to enjoy, along with beach towels that you curl up on and watch the sunset. You can also round up some friends to enjoy a day of beach volleyball or build sandcastles with the kids. With a local trip to the beach, you save on travel expenses while enjoying the beautiful nature right in your backyard.
3. Camp under the stars in your backyard
You don’t have to trek far off into the wilderness to have fun in nature. You can have a worthwhile earthy experience right in the comfort of your own backyard! Simply grab a tent, a sleeping bag, and some firewood to build yourself and your friends or family a campfire to make some delicious s’mores to add to the camping experience. If you don’t have a yard, simply bring the fun indoors. Lay some blankets down on the ground, bring out the flashlights, and share fun campfire stories that are sure to transport you and your family to the great outdoors, all from the comfort of your own home.
4. Visit a local park
Whether you live in a small town or a large metropolitan city, chances are there is a park nearby you can stop by and enjoy a fun summer afternoon. Take advantage of the bright summer days and warm weather by heading to the local park in the area and enjoying a day walking the various trails, having a picnic, and soaking in the nature. If you aren’t familiar with the parks in the city, do a little research on your city’s government website to find the best park to meet your needs.
